It sounds intense, and it is, but with the stoic barbarianism of Crom, there\u2019s a hilarity in the refreshing lack of sentimentality. Harold Page writes about <strong>By Crom!<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.com\/2015\/09\/25\/conan-is-my-spirit-guide\/\">Black Gate<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;By wrenching him from his context, Kahn reveals\u00a0Conan\u2019s personality:\u00a0all about raw personal authenticity, the kind you achieve by acting rather than angsting\u2026\u00a0making, rather than purchasing\u2026 travelling to, rather than importing from.\u00a0This is a\u00a0Conan who is still relevant today and perhaps explains why we keep coming back to the originals.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A. G. Pasquella writes about the first\u00a0<strong>By Crom!<\/strong>\u00a0zine (now out of print) in\u00a0<a title=\"Read the Broken Pencil article on By Crom.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brokenpencil.com\/reviews\/by-crom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Broken Pencil<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;This is a kinder, gentler Conan: less barbarian, more Spirit Guide-Psychiastrist; a trusted confidant, like a nonthreatening sensitive male Sex in the City-style friend (for instance, Kahn and Conan have the same taste in gladiator sandals). &#8230; Ultimately\u00a0<strong>By Crom!<\/strong>\u00a0is an interesting subversion of so-called \u201ctraditional\u201d gender roles. &#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Scott Wachter delights in\u00a0<strong>Full Colour Cromulence<\/strong>\u00a0on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbopodcast.ca\/public_html\/?p=163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I Thought They Smelled Bad on the Outside<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;Whether it be laughter in the face of existential crisis or an armed assault on the depths of the dryer in search of that last sock, Conan always has a laconic wisdom to add to the situation. &#8230; And sometimes he just helps you walk the dog and eats all your strawberries.
